Fiery Sunday

I was jolted awake barely an hour into the day – 20th December, 2009 – by perpetual heavy bangs on my locked room door. The way I felt made me realize that I hadn’t had up to 4 hours of sleep and the first emotion that streamed through me was hate of whoever was disturbing my peace at this time when I needed it most. As I came to more consciousness and realised it wasn’t just my troublesome mum (that’s what I thought of her at the time) who was at the other side of the door, I let out a scornful shout at my sister who happened to be the perpetrator at that instant; I demanded to be told why I deserved this punishment and the reply that came was, “Fire!”.

Preacher Man - Asa (Lyrics)

Preacher man, please have some faith
I've come to you, cos' I lost my way
Here I am with my bag of shame
Oh, please; don't send me away...

Yesterday, like every other day
I had it all, but now it's all gone
Where are you, where can I find you
Oh Lord, please show me your face
I need you now, I need you here, I need you everyday
I need you now, I need you here, I need you everywhere
I need you now, I need you here, I need you everyday
I need you now, I need you here, I need you everywhere

Pushed to the wall.

It was the start of a new session and typically, most students had one common problem; how to get accommodation on campus.  In the three previous years, I’d been fortunate to be in the elite class of students – consisting of all freshmen, final year, first class, and ‘special’ students and sportsmen. This time however, the story changed since I didn’t have any of the qualifications needed to be lucky. The members of this elite class are always of top priority in the accommodation exercise, and thus, need not worry about securing accommodation on campus; the rest of the students are left to scramble for the remaining bed spaces after the elite have been duly satisfied. The people that come out of the scrambling successful majorly consist of those who have got “long legs”; I’m quite doubtful of the possibility of anybody getting a bed space here by pure luck.
